چکیده

We consider a two-dimensional convection model augmented with the rotational Coriolis forcing, Ut + U · ∇xU = 2kU, with a fixed 2k being the inverse Rossby number. We ask whether the action of dispersive rotational forcing alone, U, prevents the generic finite time breakdown of the free nonlinear convection. The answer provided in this work is a conditional yes. Namely, we show that the rotating Euler equations admit global smooth solutions for a subset of generic initial configurations. With other configurations, however, finite time breakdown of solutions may and actually does occur. Thus, global regularity depends on whether the initial configuration crosses an intrinsic, O(1) critical threshold, which is quantified in terms of the initial vorticity, ω0 = ∇× U0, and the initial spectral gap associated with the 2 × 2 initial velocity gradient, η0 := λ2(0) − λ1(0), λj(0) = λj(∇U0). Specifically, global regularity of the rotational Euler equation is ensured if and only if 4kω0(α) + η 2 0 (α) < 4k, ∀α ∈ IR . We also prove that the velocity field remains smooth if and only if it is periodic. An equivalent Lagrangian formulation reconfirms the critical threshold and shows a global periodicity of velocity field as well as the associated particle orbits. Moreover, we observe yet another remarkable periodic behavior exhibited by the gradient of the velocity field. The spectral dynamics of the Eulerian formulation, [18], reveals that the vorticity and the eigenvalues (and hence the divergence) of the flow evolve with their own path-dependent period. We conclude with a kinetic formulation of the rotating Euler equation.

In this study, dynamic behavior of safety mechanism of a mechanical controller is investigated using 3D-FE simulation. This paper is concentrated on controller of a high acceleration projectile. The controller is located in the top of the projectile. Safety mechanism is divided to deformable and rigid parts. Deformable and rigid parts are simulated in Abaqus and Adams commercial soft wares; res...

Finite Capacity Queuing System with Vacations and Server Breakdowns

This paper deals with finite capacity single server queuing system with vacations. Vacation starts at rate nu if the system is empty. Also the server takes another vacation if upon his arrival to the system, finds the system empty. Customers arrive in the system in Poisson fashion at rate lamda0 during vacation, faster rate lamdaf during active service and slower rate lamdas during the breakdow...

Geometric correlations and breakdown of mesoscopic universality in spin transport.

We construct a unified semiclassical theory of charge and spin transport in chaotic ballistic and disordered diffusive mesoscopic systems with spin-orbit interaction. Neglecting dynamic effects of spin-orbit interaction, we reproduce the random matrix theory results that the spin conductance fluctuates universally around zero average. Incorporating these effects into the theory, we show that ge...

Rotation of Trajectories of Lipschitz Vector Fields

– We prove that in finite time a trajectory of a Lipschitz vector field in R can not have infinite rotation around a given point. This result extends to the mutual rotation of two trajectories of a field in R: this rotation is bounded from above on any finite time interval. The bounds we give are only in terms of the Lipschitz constant of the field and the length of the time interval.

Translation symmetry breakdown in low-dimensional lattices of pentagonal rings.

The mechanism of translation symmetry breakdown in newly proposed low-dimensional carbon pentagon-constituted nanostructures (e.g., pentagraphene) with multiple sp(2)/sp(3) sublattices was studied by GGA DFT, DFTB, and model potential approaches. It was found that finite nanoclusters suffer strong uniform unit cell bending followed by breaking of crystalline lattice linear translation invarianc...
